
Did you ever wonder what to do with dead batteries or old cell phones? Now you can bring them into the library for recycling and/or repurposing. On the exit side of the circulation desk, there is a box for recycling batteries, cell phones and chargers. Below are some FAQ's and answers:
Why should batteries and cell phones be recycled?
Batteries and cell phones contain toxic chemicals. When tossed into the garbage, they end up in landfills, where often the case is crushed or corrodes and the chemicals enter the environment, including the food chain.
Where will the recycled batteries and cell phones ultimately end up?
The cell phones will be donated to a charity, where some will be repurposed and others will be recycled. Some of the batteries will be recycled. The batteries that cannot be recycled will be put into a special hazardous waste landfill.
Where else can I recycle batteries and cell phones?
Longs, Walgreens and Whole Foods accept batteries for recylcing. Cell phones are accepted at Good Will, Whole Foods, Radio Shack and at most cell phone stores.
